Mercedes-Benz has done it again! Replacing the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is the hot new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, which was first unveiled to a waiting public in 2009 and which is now finally ready to make a big splash in the automotive world!
The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG could most recently be viewed on display at the main booth down at the Indonesian International Motor Show, which was held back in July. The sleek new model certainly attracted a lot of attention and admiring glances and the SLS, a two-door coupe, sports modern features in combination with various retro elements.
Billed as a ‘Luxury Grand Tourer’, the SLS AMG was developed by Mercedes-Benz AMG and has been described as the spiritual successor to the 300SL Gullwing and its classic gull-wing doors. With its long bonnet, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG’s passenger compartment is close to the rear of the vehicle and, unlike the SLR, the SLS’s wing doors swing open upwards on gas struts. The doors must be closed manually however, as an automatic system would have added a whole 90 pounds to the vehicle’s weight.
The monster AMG 6300cc V8 engine that sits under the SLS AMG’s bonnet recently won the 2010 International Engine of the Year Award for its efficiency and for being incredibly light for the power that it puts out. In fact, the SLS’s new engine is a whole 3kg lighter than the previous model!
Magna International supplied the aluminum for the car’s exterior and this is the only road going Mercedes to feature Alubeam paint. Available colour schemes include both metallic and matte versions of Alubeam Silver, Syvanite Grey, Alanite Grey and red. These are complimented by the SLS’s leather and alcantara interior and handsome ten-spoke forged wheels.
There will eventually be at least four different versions of the SLS AMG available, the first of which made its debut back in 2009. Moreover, between next year and 2013, Mercedes will also be releasing a roadster (with conventional doors and a soft top), an electric powered model and also a Black Series model.
It has been reported that the initial SLS quota set aside for Indonesia consisted of a mere 20 units, however 25 have already been shipped here out of the 40 that have been ordered. This is an overwhelming response considering that prices for this magnificent beast can reach a wallet stinging Rp.4.2 billion! What you get for your money though is the ultimate in quality, comfort and luxury. You just can’t beat a Benz!536 million
