The month of August is a special month for the Indonesian as it commemorates the birth of the Republic of Indonesia on 17th August 1945. A variety of competitions of folk games from around the Archipelago are played to celebrate this eventful occasion, such as greased pole climbing, tug-of war and traditional performances on the theme of heroism.
