Exhilarated kids shoot out of the tunnel like ping pong balls from an assembly line. A sign reads: Work is where you play. There is pop-up furniture, and private chambers called 'pods.' And if I squint real hard, I can see up the skirt of a woman standing seven floors above me. Am I dreaming? What's going on?
Well, it's all going on at the fX Lifestyle X'nter on Jalan Sudirman, near Ratu Plaza. The new mall, opened on July 1st, offers 'business and pleasure in one go': a snazzy, upbeat décor encompassing art exhibitions; designer meeting rooms; a yoga centre; spas and salons; the usual bar, café, and restaurant suspects; the boutique supermarket Bali Deli; fashion and gadgets boutiques; Celebrity Fitness VIP; karaoke; a XXI Platinum cinema, and a 72 m long x 28.25m high slide.
Let's start with the slide. It's awesome. It's called the Atmosfear. Designed and made in Germany by toboggan-maker, Wiegand GmbH, this stainless steel tunnel slips you from the seventh floor to the ground floor in 12 seconds: so much more efficient than the escalator. To ride the slide, show the receipt of any purchase made within the mall to the desk on the ground floor; they will issue your ticket to ride. The slide zips straight through the centre of the mall, so shoppers at every level can watch you hurtle down the 30-45 degree incline, reaching speeds of 7m per second, or 25kph.
The second novel attraction at fX is the series of business pods on the second floor. 'There are eleven unique pods,' explains Estee Artianty, General Manager. 'Each was designed by an award-winning local architect, and each has its own distinct ambience.'
Estee opens the door to Pod 9, a chamber reminiscent of a Star Trek set, with a silver-coloured hydraulic-powered table and yellow suede seating and walls. 'The pods are available in three shapes: circular, oval, and kite,' Estee continued. 'Prices start at Rp 150,000 an hour.'
