The 2008 Indonesian Rugby Lunch

It was a packed ballroom at the Ritz-Carlton Pacific Place on Saturday 14th June where the rugby faithfuls had gathered to celebrate the great game – and have some fun!

There was a warm welcome from Stephen Barber, IRFU Chairman, followed by a rousing reception for guest speakers, ex. Wallabies, Jim Phipps and Topo Rodriquez.

MC 'Sambo' Sampson led the proceedings with his usual style and vigour and amassed a serious amount of money for charity in the auction. Well done Sambo.

Among the many awards and presentations was one that stood out for us at Jakarta Java Kini as our publisher Alistair Speirs was introduced into The Indonesian Rugby Hall of Fame!

The nominated people for the first ever awards were:

  1. Gordon Benton- a founder of rugby in Indonesia & an early rugby historian.
  2. Alistair Speirs – played in 7 HK 7's; was instrumental in rugby 70's & 80's.
  3. Sugiman – an Indonesian national who played in his part in the past & recent times.
  4. Paul Hoban (RIP) – reportedly has was a significant personality in the early 90's
  5. David Keefe - recently retired and long serving ISCI player, a Rhinos 1st Test Player

A big thanks from all of us here at Jakarta Java Kini to the IRFU for recognizing Alistair's contribution to the game and congratulations to all the Hall of Famers.

By the way, the audience watched two outstanding tests: The All Black vs England and the Wallabies vs Ireland, with the Southern hemisphere taking the honours both times!
