On
May 6, the third edition of the Bank Commonwealth Premier Golf League
2007 kicked off at Cengkareng with a record 12 clubs fielding the best
amateur golfers from the Greater Jakarta area in head to head match play.
This season the league has two divisions: The Premier Division and Division One. In the Premier League defending champions Jagorawi got off to a very bright start, beating host club and last year's third-placed team Cengkareng 4 ½ to ½. Jagorawi winners were Hoo Eek Kee, Ruswin, Andi Djajanegara and Jimmy Masrin, whilst Albert Wanandi finshed all-square with Cengkareng's Scott Puzey. Division One saw an opening day victory for newcomers Batam who just beat fellow debutants Danau Toba 3 -2 in a very close game.
The event structure is as follows: The leading golf clubs in the region select and nominate their best 10 players to represent them over the season. These players must be amateurs, club members, have never been professionals and they cannot play for any other team in that season. Only in exceptional circumstances will the Organizing Committee allow additional non-named players to play for their team.
These 12 clubs are split into a Premier Division and a Division One, with six teams in each. At each of the six events, all held at a different golf club, all the clubs send their five best players to play head-to-head against five from one of the other teams. Over the whole season each club plays all of the other participating clubs once. Teams are given league points for their performance at each event – three points for a win and one for a draw...
The following teams will compete for the highest honors:
In Divison A:
Emeralda 1, Fella, Cengkareng, Jagorawi, Golf 2000 and Matoa.
In Divison B:
BCIOG, Emeralda 2, Sedana, Gentech, Batam, Danau Toba
At the end of the season, the top two clubs in the Premier Division based on league points play off for the overall Championship Trophy. The top two teams in Division One will also play off for promotion to the Premier Divison in 2008. They will replace the losers of the fifth and sixth place play-off from the Premier League.
In addition there are the Hotel Kristal Awards given to the best player, the longest driver and the most accurate golfer and handed out on the basis of their season-long performances.
The leading individual point scorer in each division will be awarded a Player of the Year Trophy from Titleist. There will also be an award presented by Valuair for the most sporting team in each division, judged by the team captains at the end of the season.
At each leg the team captain will nominate a total of five players from each member club. These players will be numbered one through five and will play one-on-one scratch matches against the corresponding player from another member club. The allocation of the players to the numbers one through five is at the discretion of the team captains. All the teams in the league will play each other once throughout the season.
In 2005, the Jagorawi Old Course team became the first ever champions, while the Jagorawi New Course team claimed the impressive cup in 2006. On June 3rd, Emeralda will host the second leg of the Bank Commonwealth Premier Golf League while June 24 will see Matoa hosting leg 3. The final day will take place on September 2 at Emeralda.
