Saint Seiya, Akira, Naruto, Inu Yasha, Fushigi Yuugi – sound familiar? No, they are not names of past Japanese emperors but of anime characters, which refers to Japanese animation. Anime has roots in manga or Japanese comics dating back hundred years ago, starting as pictures drawn on temple walls, then on wooden blocks, and finally as woodblock prints with captions collected in books.
