One of the many reasons people flock LifeSpa is the variety of activities they offer. Located in more than ten areas in Jakarta, each branch has an "ultra modern gym," daily fitness classes, fitness appraisal programs, sauna, steam, whirlpool, swimming pool (open only on weekdays), personal trainers, body treatments and skin and beauty care.

The LifeSpa at the Hilton is very minimalist with a simple reception area along with few basic couches and not to forget the Reebok store – efficient for the gym goers. Most customers, I noticed were either businessmen in suits carrying a gym bag or rich Chinese women with Louis Vuitton bags (real ones!) and spandex. Guests at the Hilton are also welcome to use any of the facilities.

The treatment rooms at LifeSpa are fairly small – one massage table and a sink. Usually, spas have "lay back, relax" kind of music, but surprisingly they didn't. No lit candles either, just very dim lighting and burning incense. Anita, my therapist, recommended that I should try their full body treatment, which consists of a foot massage, body scrub, aromatherapy massage, body mask, herbal bath and body wash. The massage was quite significant because the pressure put into the massage was perfect, slow and rhythmic leading me to a peaceful sleep. The massage takes about a full 60 minutes. Using traditional products, the body scrub removes any damaged skin. I wasn't spiritually enhanced but my skin was too velvety to touch.

LifeSpa also offers a head and shoulder massage, foot reflexology, foot spa, waxing, manicure, pedicure and others. Body treatments range from Rp. 95000 to Rp. 175000. While skin and beauty care treatments range from Rp. 40000 to Rp. 140000. (KV)

Nestled along one of the busiest streets in South Jakarta, Roger's Salon, Clinic & Spa was the place to be on an early Monday morning, after a weekend full of muscle strains and cramps. Upon my arrival, my olfactory sense was triggered by a eucalyptus scent – quite strong yet pleasant. And to top that off was the choice of interior décor, which includes tall glass vases with fresh flowers and luminous candles, already eliciting a sense of tranquillity.

More excited than I was before, I was led to the VIP area, the most secluded area in Roger's. I knew straight away that I would find an escape from any of the physical pain taking over my body. The VIP area is ideal for couples wanting a romantic day at the spa – but if ever an argument breaks, there are the curtains in between that could separate you perfectly from each other but please avoid the lit candles!

Roger's offers seven different aroma and spa treatment packages. The prices range from Rp. 170000 to Rp. 700000. Each treatment has a distinctive name that comes along with it: Aroma Harmony, Aroma Heaven, Aroma Happiness, Spa Romantic, Spa Beauty, Spa Superbeauty, and Spa Cleopatra. I went for the Spa Romantic, which consists of aromatherapy, body massage, body scrub, steam/sauna, body mask and herbal bath. The entire treatment can take about three hours, but you can always cut it short. The other packages include facials, manicures, pedicures and creambath.

My therapist Yuli was rather petite for an Indonesian lady, so why would anyone think of her as a masseuse? I certainly didn't. Surprisingly, her hands felt sturdy and strong yet gentle. The Spa Romantic treatment begins with a body massage – one is laid down on the bed and is rubbed tenderly with essential oils, either revitalizing or whitening oil. She starts with my feet up to my thighs, upper body and making her way to my neck and head. Combining rhythmic and circular motions, Café Del Mar beats and the olfactory pleasure of the whitening oil, I was rejuvenated and restored from the weekend. After the massage, I was treated with a traditional body scrub. The best part came last, my herbal bath. A bath with herbal oils and fresh flower petals – I felt like a princess in disguise. (KV)

Men often feel uncomfortable in ‘girly' spas. Aromatherapy, floating flowers and gentle sounds of pan flute, just don't do it for them. Oase spa is designed just for men. Women are allowed at Oase, but only for body treatments and massages.

Daoen Spa is conveniently located just off Pondok Pinang in Plaza Pondok Indah 3. Given its mini-mall setting, one would probably expect a speedy service. But once you set foot in the spa, it feels almost rustic. Those expecting the sleek sterility common in many spas won't find it here. The smell is very similar to the natural oils carted around in recycled water bottles by the massage ladies on the beach.

Daoen offers practically every treatment imaginable, including a wide range of facial treatments with Thalgo products. Treatments include the Wrinkle Facial for Women and Men, Men's Facial, Delicate Sensitive Facial, Whitening with MMA, and the Cold Marine
(for very sensitive skin).

Daoen also offers package treatments, for both men and women. The men's packet includes Shiatsu Massage, Scrub, Milk Bath, O2 Marine Facial, Creambath and Blowdry and Snack, for Rp 450,000 for half day.

The full day package at Rp. 600,000 includes Relaxation Massage, Scrub, Milk Bath, Steam, O2 Marine Facial, Creambath and Blowdry, Manicure and Pedicure and Snack.
